Heuristics

A detection method that looks for suspicious behaviour patterns rather than known signatures.

Heuristics is a detection method in antivirus software that looks not for known signatures but for suspicious patterns – e.g. "this program writes to protected system folders without being signed and tries to inject into other processes".

Heuristics is the main line of defence against zero-day exploits and new malware variants.
