Head-to-head

If you are torn between two specific products, a direct comparison often helps more than the whole table.

Password-manager comparison – frequently asked questions

Which password manager is best in 2026?
1Password (convenience & family), Bitwarden (open source, excellent free tier), Dashlane (identity protection) are our top three. If you avoid cloud sync, KeePass (local) is the pick. The table compares them directly.
Are password managers really secure?
Yes – with zero-knowledge architecture even the vendor can't see your passwords. NCSC explicitly recommends password managers. The remaining risk is the master password: lose it and you lose everything (always print the recovery code).
Is the browser-built-in password manager enough (Chrome, Safari)?
For basic protection yes, but limited: weaker per-device encryption, no cross-browser sync, no secure notes, no family sharing. A dedicated suite is clearly superior in 2026.
What does a password manager cost per year in CHF?
CHF 20–40/year for individual plans, CHF 40–80/year for family plans (5–6 people). Bitwarden offers a free tier that is enough for many single users.
Can I also store credit cards and documents?
Yes, all vendors in our comparison encrypt credit cards, identities, secure notes, and (depending on plan) documents up to 1 GB.
What happens if the vendor is hacked?
With zero-knowledge architecture the vaults are encrypted even on the vendor side – with a strong master password the data stays inaccessible. Example LastPass 2022: vaults were stolen, weak master passwords were then crackable. Lesson: 14+ chars, unique, 2FA.
