The Renewal Trap 2026: 16 Antivirus Suites Tracked — Markups Up to +217%
In a nutshell
We tracked year-1 and renewal prices for 16 antivirus vendors for 12 months in CHF. Market average: +83% renewal markup. TotalAV leads at +217%, the friendliest mainstream option (ESET) at +45%. Only one holds flat pricing — and one is completely free.
Antivirus pricing in Switzerland follows a predictable pattern: the first year is heavily discounted to win customers, the renewal at full list price arrives quietly via auto-renewal. To put numbers on this, we tracked the year-1 and renewal prices of 16 antivirus suites available to Swiss consumers in May 2026. The result: the market average renewal markup is +83%, the top outlier +217%, and only one vendor holds genuinely flat pricing.

Methodology
We took the publicly listed Swiss price (CHF, incl. VAT) of each vendor's most-pushed plan — typically "Total Security", "360 Deluxe" or "Premium" tier — and recorded both the year-1 price and the renewal-year price as stated on the vendor's checkout in Swiss-IP traffic. Where multiple plans exist, we took the featured plan in our regular product reviews. Prices were re-verified weekly; this article reflects the state on 17 May 2026.
The "Increase" column is the percentage delta between renewal and year 1. A renewal of CHF 89.90 vs year-1 of CHF 49.90 is +80%.
Key findings
1. TotalAV at +217% — by far the most aggressive renewal markup
TotalAV\'s introductory price of CHF 29.90 is the cheapest entry in the entire market. The renewal at CHF 94.90 is 3.2× the introductory. Customers who let auto-renewal run pay CHF 65 more in year 2 than they did in year 1 — for the same product.
2. The "Big Four" U.S. brands (Norton, McAfee, Avast, AVG): around +100% on renewal
Norton, McAfee, AVG (owned by Gen Digital, like Norton) and Avast (also Gen Digital since 2022) all sit between +98% and +122% renewal markup. With a corporate structure favouring profitability over loyalty, the pattern is internally coordinated rather than coincidental.
3. ESET, F-Secure and Avira: the friendliest mainstream
Slovak ESET (+45%), Finnish F-Secure (+50%) and German Avira (+67%) — all European vendors — sit at the bottom of the markup table. The geographic pattern is interesting but not deterministic (Bitdefender, also European, sits at +80%).
4. Intego: the only flat-pricing player
Intego, the Mac-specialist out of Austin TX, holds its Mac Internet Security X9 at CHF 49.90 for both year 1 and renewal. It is the only suite in the entire sample with no markup at all. In an industry where +83% is the average, this is genuinely unusual.
5. Microsoft Defender: completely free
Microsoft Defender is bundled with Windows 10/11 and costs CHF 0 in both year 1 and renewal. For users with cautious browsing habits, AV-TEST scores now rate Defender as "very good" for protection — making it a legitimate baseline option.
Practical takeaways
- Disable auto-renewal immediately after buying — in your vendor account, usually under "Subscription" or "Payment settings". One click, no support call needed at Norton/Bitdefender/McAfee.
- Calendar the expiry date — set a reminder 14 days before. That window gives you time to either re-subscribe at the introductory price or migrate to a fresher vendor.
- For 3-year planning, prefer the European trio (ESET, F-Secure, Avira) — the cumulative cost is dramatically lower than the U.S. Big Four if you intend to stick around.
- Consider Microsoft Defender as baseline if you have cautious browsing habits, 2FA on key accounts and don\'t need extras (VPN, password manager, parental controls).
